You may have a lot of high performers on your team, but being the team MVP rarely prepares these rising stars for the responsibility of coaching others. This is particularly true when it comes to managing former colleagues. The fact is great players don’t automatically make great coaches. In the sports world it’s rare to find a great coach who was once a great player and you certainly never see the season MVP named to the position of coach the following year! However, in the corporate world we do quite the opposite and often pay a heavy price. The reality is far too many companies don’t take the time to teach their star players how to become great coaches. They merely grant them a title and expect the rest to work itself out.
Dr. Woody’s popular From Player to Coach program is a method for helping new coaches gain the skills and confidence they need to perform at the next level. From Player to Coach has been showcased through the Institute for Management Studies since 2013. Attendees have included managers from BOSE, Verizon, Liberty Mutual, and The NBA. The program focuses on helping new managers:
• Use Values as a Compass
• Articulate a Leadership Philosophy
• Understand the Psychology of Motivation
• Generate Positive Thinking
• Build the Bond of Trust
• Create a Culture of Open Dialogue
• Coach with a Light Touch Every Day
• Manage Former Peers
• Navigate Tough Conversations
